On the other corner across the street from mine, was a woman about my size, 5’2″ and maybe 125 lbs., in full firefighter gear; hat, coat, boots, and air tank, none of which looked like it was made for someone her size. She looked like a five year old that put on all of her daddy’s work gear in a game of playing ‘dress-up.’ She was trying to pull the hose to the hydrant, and was struggling. It was twisting as she unfurled it, and no one was paying attention to her. (She kept looking down the other block at the rest of the men already on the scene) She then attempted to get the cap off the fire hydrant.

By this time, because it was almost a hundred degrees outside- and even though I was wearing a tank top and thin cotton summer pants, I was hot, and wanted my air conditioning. So I went back into my house.  I watched from a window, like a typical ‘nosy neighbor.’
She was frantic. Sweat was pouring off of her, and she kept turning around to see if she was being watched. I almost felt sorry for her. But I could not help thinking, that if my house was on fire and she was in charge of the water to put it out, I’d be royally fucked; probably burned to a crisp.
It turns out that the men down the other street had already hooked up their hoses to other hydrants in short order, and were minute-man ready for an expeditious need for it. This woman was ‘a probie’ and this was her first time out of ‘the house’ which was right down the block from me. Another tid-bit of all of this is; the smoking house having the problems belonged to one of their brothers. (a fireman that happened to be out of town, but because his street was sealed off when he finally arrived- actually did park on my fucking lawn…and is how I got the info on the girl later, because he knocked on my door to apologize)
I asked him about the girl. I asked him if she was going to pass muster. He said “Not a chance, but to be politically correct for a gender quota, we have to have a woman in our house.”
They left her there to unhook and roll up the hose with two guys and her truck. They did not help her. She finished up an hour after all of the other trucks were gone. I am sure I saw tears.
Some jobs were just not made for women. I would not want this woman pulling me out of a burning building. But feminist governance says that she is equally qualified, and demands that she be there through politically enforced blackmail. Since I have personally been in a house fire when I was a young girl, I have witnessed the brawn and brains it takes to do this job.
I wish that the asshole that said this woman had to be hired, had this woman answer the call to their own house on fire…with their children’s lives in her hands. Maybe then, the right man for the job would actually get the fucking job; gender quota be damned. Feminists that put lives in danger for their own self-serving agenda be damned.

Gender Research Is Often Sexist

Alex B. Berezow – the editor of RealClearScience.com – has written an excellent article about how gender research ends up being ideological and… yes, sexist.
He’s studied a ’scientific’ paper where women and men were asked to look for sexist behaviors in their life. The result?
Based on a list of behaviors in the paper, sexism was essentially considered to be any differential treatment based on gender, regardless of whether it was good or bad. A man telling a woman to stay in the kitchen qualified as sexism. But a man opening a door for a woman or believing that women should be rescued first in a disaster qualified as “benevolent sexism.” Tired of hearing about sexism? That’s sexist, too.
As it turns out, if everything is defined as sexism, then sexism ends up being everywhere.
In Sweden, gender feminists often talk about ‘putting on your gender glasses’ so you can see all the sexism around you. Well, if you put on blue glasses then everything looks blue! This is exactly what the good dr Berezow has uncovered in his review of this piece of research.
Seeing the world through the lens of gender feminists, also means that you twist any kind of difference between male and female behavior as being negative for women. This leads to the construction of a bizarre terminology such as ‘benevolent sexism’. When women get the better deal then it is benevolent!
I couldn’t make this stuff up…
Gender feminists are also thoroughly unaware that their view of men is inherently sexist:
At the end of the article, the authors declare that men have a higher social status. (Isn’t that a sexist statement?) But worry not. They suggest that men can be trained to be more empathetic. (Isn’t that sexist?) While on a crusade to fight anti-female sexism, the authors overlook anti-male sexism.Training your man – perhaps similarly to how you train your dog? – is not labeled as sexist. Can you imagine what would happen if a group of men publicly discussed training women to be more accommodating to men?
Finally, dr Berezow puts his finger on what many of us have long suspected. Gender research based on feminism rarely meets the demands of scientific objectivity:
The website of SAGE, which publishes the journal, describes it as a “feminist, scientific, peer-reviewed journal.” The authors also admit that their goal is to “reduce endorsement” of sexism. However, this constitutes a clear conflict of interest. A journal cannot state an ideological goal and simultaneously claim to be scientific. Would a global warming journal be taken seriously if it claimed “debunking the hoax” as one of its goals?Let’s hope these kinds of analyses become more mainstream, so that gender research can be infused with a measure of objectivity, and the male sexism rooted out.

The anti-male saga continues as false claims by any WOMAN is automatically deemed to be 100 percent correct and does not require verification in any way, shape or form. Vladek Filler: A political prisoner in America

Many of you will know the name of Vladek Filler.  Thanks in part to your help with drawing media attention to his case, and the fact that he was innocent, Filler was exonerated of the false rape charges against him.
He was, however, convicted falsely of assaulting his estranged wife, Ligia Filler, by putting a bruise on her arm. The court has scheduled Vladek’s sentencing hearing for August 10, 2011, at 9 am at Hancock County Superior Court in Maine, despite clear evidence that the assault conviction was based on fraud.

I am asking for help from MRAs to make their voices heard concerning the fraud and abuse inflicted on Vladek Filler and his children by Ligia Filler, ADA Mary Kellett, DA Bassano, ADA Paul Cavanaugh, and the local legal establishment which is determined to severely punish an innocent man because he fought for the custody of his sons and because he has defied their corrupt actions against him.

Vladek’s attorney not only filed an appeal for the assault conviction but went further and filed a post-trial motion asking the judge to acquit Vladek or order a new trial based on evidence of Vladek’s innocence.

Included in the motion is just a few irrefutable facts proving that Filler was wrongfully convicted, based on the evidence.  What the motion did not mention was that the original trial judge blocked a mountain of key evidence, including Police reports which explicitly stated that Ligia Filler changed her entire story days later after she materialized a fresh bruise on her arm. None of her prior transcribed statements about the incident were allowed at trial.
To date the judge has not ruled on the post-trial motion to acquit or set aside the conviction for a new trial.  Instead the establishment is rushing to use the wrongful misdemeanor conviction to harshly punish Vladek before blatant fraud and evidence suppression gets reviewed by a higher court.
Simply put, Filler’s insistence on defending himself against lies and corruption has made him a liability to the system.  They are pushing actively to put him in jail as quickly and quietly as possible.

As Thomas Ball faced certain court abuse and jail at his upcoming hearing, on August 10, 2011, Vladek will face what is, on its face, political imprisonment.

Prosecutor Paul Cavanaugh will argue for Filler to receive the maximum prison sentence (1 year). Yes, that is a year in prison for allegedly putting a bruise on a known liar’s arm that did not appear for four days after the “incident.” The judge allowed Vladek to remain free pending appeal, but required a $50K surety bail stating that it was “due to the seriousness,” of the allegations against him.  This treatment for a class D misdemeanor conviction with no prior record is unheard of.
The fix is in, people. They want to use this misdemeanor assault charge to make an example of Filler for speaking out; for filing a Bar Complaint against Kellett; for blowing the whistle on their crimes against men.
This is the same district and prosecutor (Paul Cavanaugh) who sought only 30 days in jail for a confessed female child molester.
Not only was she allowed to keep custody of her boys despite being convicted for molesting their friend, but the rationale used for her 30 day sentence was to allow her to be with the children.
No one seems to care that Vladek’s abused and traumatized sons will face more trauma and threats from both CPS and Ligia Filler if Vladek is imprisoned. Ligia Filler has a documented history of abusing her children.  Officials saw her treatment of them as serious enough to award Vladek full custody despite the fact that he was being prosecuted for rape and assault.

But it gets even more insane in Salem Village. Filler was criminally charged with this fake assault solely by Ligia Filler’s over the phone complaint. That’s right, the police never even responded to the “scene of the crime.”  They simply had a warrant issued for his arrest based on an allegation an alleged victim made on the telephone.
Evidence shows the police chief, Guy Wycoff, helped Ligia Filler concoct her story days later. By contrast, the police department and Kellett’s office refuse to allow criminal charges against Ligia Filler for well substantiated domestic abuse, harassment, or even for being caught by the police causing over $10,000 of theft and destruction to Vladek’s awarded property.
Instead, on August 10, Ligia Filler and the same strangers who coached her to cry to be more believable, and helped her destroy Vladek’s life and lives of his children, will be allowed to address the Court and call for his imprisonment. Ligia Filler will be allowed to make her demands for his punishment for a misdemeanor assault by using her absurd and false rape accusations. Vladek’s sentencing is being turned into a public stoning by the villagers.
The witch trials must end. As I write this, still another false sexual assault case is being readied for trial by Mary Kellett against another father desperately fighting for his children with his wife. And there is also the recent event that Kellett conned a woman in another case to not testify on behalf of her estranged husband by convincing her he had killed his first wife.  That case was thrown out on Kellett’s misconduct when the judge found out what she did.  More on both of these cases later.
But right now I am calling for help from MRAs to speak out against this gross abuse of due process and civil rights.  As Thomas Ball faced certain court abuse and jail at his upcoming hearing, on August 10, 2011, Vladek will face what is, on its face, political imprisonment.
We need as many messages of support as possible before the sentencing hearing.  The letters will be considered directly by the trial judge and will allow Vladek’s supporters to have direct access to the judge.  We need people to call for Vladek’s acquittal or new trial.  We need people to demand justice for Vladek and his children – not more abuse and imprisonment.

Given this research, combined with the anecdotal evidence of victims and an increasing unease amongst commentators and clinicians, is it either legitimate or useful to continue to define DV, IPV and family violence as a gender hate crime, perpetrated overwhelmingly by men against women and children?

Domestic violence, intimate partner violence, (IPV) and family violence are defined in Australian federal government policy as gender crimes, committed overwhelmingly by men against "women and their children."
A gender crime is a category of hate crime.
Hate crimes (also known as bias-motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her perceived membership in a particular social group, usually defined by race, religion, class, ethnicity, nationality, disability, age, gender, gender identity, social status or political affiliation. In hate crimes people are attacked because of who they are.
Government policies designed to reduce the incidence of DV and IPV are founded on the feminist analysis of these crimes as gender hate crimes that occur in the overarching context of a patriarchal hegemony constructed of unequal power relations between men and women, and adherence to rigid gender stereotypes that position women and children as the property of men.
The latest 12-year National Plan to Reduce Violence against women and their children released earlier this year by the Gillard government does not address female perpetrated domestic violence, IPV, and family violence against women and children. It is based on an ideological perspective that either does not allow that women are violent in families, or claims that if they are, their violence is considerably less than that of men, occurs in the patriarchal context and as a consequence of patriarchal values, therefore is not as serious or as frequent as that inflicted by men on women and children.
The National Plan defines domestic violence solely as "violence against women," that is, a gender-hate crime, as follows:
1.The term violence against women means any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life. 

2.The National Plan targets two main types of violence: domestic and family violence and sexual assault. These crimes are gendered crimes – that is they have an unequal impact on women.3…the majority of people who experience this kind of violence are women - in a home, at the hands of men they know.The Plan also states that interventions to prevent DV, IPV and family violence "must be undertaken in the context of unequal gendered distribution of power and resources," and that two of its goals are "controlling macho, aggressive and ultimately violent behaviour," and "holding men accountable for their behaviours."
The Plan's bias is indisputable.
What the research says A cursory search of the literature will reveal a plethora of international and some domestic research that challenges the feminist paradigm of DV, IPV and family violence. An Australian example is this 2009 paper by UWS lecturer Michael Woods titled "Domestic Violence in Australia." Critiquing government "desktop" research on which DV prevention policy papers are based, Woods notes:
The basic framework propagated by these papers that will direct legislation, policies and services for years to come is a gender paradigm. Yet gender as a central construct in any explanatory framework of DV has been demonstrated comprehensively as inadequate – it does not accord with the evidence from major international and local studies.Woods concludes:


This last sentence is inarguable. The gender paradigm we have used to understand and address DV for the last forty years has not resulted in any significant decrease in the crime.
This 2007 Canadian study on Perceptions of Motives in Intimate Partner Violence (Hamel, Desmarais and Nicholls) concludes: "Results of this study provide empirical support for the existence of a gender bias within the field of domestic violence to minimize intimate partner violence perpetrated by women."
This US study (Journal of Aggression, Conflict and Peace Research, Volume 2 Issue 3, July 2010) on what researchers termed "Intimate terrorism" [IT] by women towards men concluded:
The results of this study indicate that the adherence to the theory that patriarchy is the foundation of IT in Western, developed nations deserves reconsideration. Because IT can be perpetrated by both men and women, against both men and women, it is imperative that researchers, practitioners, and decision/policy-makers reconsider their conception of the causes of both IT and CCV so that all potential victims are addressed and provided with services.
A 2005 study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia titled "The gender paradigm in domestic violence research and theory: Part 1-The conflict of theory and data" concludes, among other observations that:
One detects a tendency to dismiss male victimization in reports where the female victimization rate is higher. It raises the question as to why this comparison is so often made. If group B is victimized less than Group A, it is nevertheless being victimized and the social mandate should be to reduce victimization of all citizens, not just certain groups. We would not accept this argument for any other pair of groups. Although women may be injured at a higher rate, men are injured as well. The inevitable conclusion is that feminist theory on intimate violence is flawed. It cannot accept the reality of female violence. While male violence is viewed as never justified, female violence is viewed as always justified. The data do not support this double standard.
Same sex domestic and intimate partner violence.
The 12-year National Plan is heterosexist in its focus. Based on a gender paradigm in which women are victims and men are perpetrators, it effectively renders same sex DV and IPV invisible.
This is because if the Plan were to acknowledge the seriousness and prevalence of same sex violence, its definition of DV as a gender-hate crime perpetrated by men against women would be discredited.
Again, a cursory search of the literature will reveal some significant material on lesbian DV and IPV, though the area is still very under-researched.
The following is a paper delivered at the Australian and New Zealand Critical Criminology Conference 2010 by researcher Justine Hotten, on the lack of services and research in Australia for lesbians who experience and perpetrate DV and IPV. The author concludes that Australian research inevitably assumes heterosexuality in issues of DV and IPV, due to the use of dominant feminist frameworks for identification of the problem.
This heterosexism is identified as a serious barrier to seeking help with lesbian partner violence, as the prejudice informs service provision.
This research from Murdoch University reports:
Some studies also suggest that the rate of violence is higher in same sex relationships. A 1985 study of 1109 lesbians by Gwat-Yong Lie and Sabrina Gentlewarrier reported that slightly more than half of the respondents indicated that they had been abused by a female partner. Coleman, in a 1990 study of 90 lesbians reported that 46.6% had experienced repeated acts of violence. Finally, Ristock's study of 113 lesbians reported that 41% said they had been abused in one or more relationships.
The Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearing House offers this UK study on DV in gay and lesbian relationships. It states:
Domestic violence in gay and lesbian relationships, as in heterosexual relationships, ranges from physical or sexual violence to psychological, emotional or economic abuse (Bagshaw et al. 2000). Like domestic violence in heterosexual relationships, domestic violence in gay and lesbian relationships includes: a pattern of behaviour, involving one partner using and maintaining power and control over the other, which causes fear in the other partner (ACON 2004, p. 5).
The report concludes:
Future research could also seek to provide a better understanding of how current approaches to domestic violence marginalise people on the basis of sexual preference, identity, orientation…
Studies such as this one this one by Mark W Lehman (2007) conclude that:
The vast majority of experts state that same-sex domestic violence occurs to the same extent or more frequently than does opposite-sex domestic violence: on average one in every four couples.
There is a considerable body of evidence on female perpetrated DV and IPV, and enough on DV and IPV in lesbian relationships, to justify questioning the heterosexist assumptions on which the 12-year National Plan is based. Given this research, combined with the anecdotal evidence of victims and an increasing unease amongst commentators and clinicians, is it either legitimate or useful to continue to define DV, IPV and family violence as a gender hate crime, perpetrated overwhelmingly by men against women and children?
The National Plan outlines the Gillard government's intention to reduce DV, IPV and family violence over the next 12 years. In reality, the Plan will address only male perpetrated violence.
In so doing, the Plan will continue to effectively silence the voices of victims of female perpetrators in both heterosexual and same sex relationships.
The Plan continues to use the outdated and increasingly contested framework of gender hate crime. There is certainly more than enough reason to question the use of this framework as a basis for public policy, not least its ineffectiveness to date.
We urgently need a far more holistic approach to the problems of domestic, intimate partner and family violence, one that demands policy makers incorporate alternative frameworks of perception, of which there are several, into the official definitions and understanding of DV on which policy is based.
Domestic violence is problem that dearly costs our society both financially, and in terms of extensive physical, psychological and emotional damage, often life-long, to the women, men and children who are its victims.
Is domestic violence a gender hate crime? I would argue that evidence increasingly suggests that is not.
Does this matter? When policy designed to reduce this crime is based on a false ideological premise that cannot help but detrimentally affect services and outcomes, I would suggest the definition of the crime matters a great deal.

Internationally there is a growing recognition that a gendered conceptualisation of DV has passed its use-by date, and that such explanations do not account for the reality of DV research findings. Interventions based on a gendered approach are ineffective.
